Governor Ivey Salutes Alabama Exporters Driving Growth with Trade Excellence Awards

MONTGOMERY, AL— Governor Kay Ivey on Wednesday recognized five Alabama companies for their achievements in international business, presenting them with the 2025 Governor’s Trade Excellence Awards during a ceremony at the State Capitol.

The annual awards spotlight companies whose global operations contribute to the state’s economy and help promote the “Made in Alabama” brand worldwide.

During the ceremony, Governor Ivey also recognized Mercedes-Benz U.S. International for its ongoing contributions to Alabama’s export strength and declared May as “World Trade Month” in the state.

“These exporters are proving that Alabama businesses can compete — and win — on the global stage,” Ivey said during the event. “As they grow their international presence, they’re also creating jobs and opportunity here at home.”

Alabama exports reached $26.8 billion in 2024, representing the state’s second-highest annual total and a nearly 30% increase over pre-pandemic figures. Products made in Alabama were shipped to 194 countries, with motor vehicles among the most in-demand goods.

Secretary of Commerce Ellen McNair highlighted the importance of international engagement in supporting growth across the state.

The 2025 Trade Excellence Award recipients include:

  • Central Steel Service (Pelham): A distributor of corrosion-resistant steel products for global infrastructure and design projects, exporting to markets such as Canada, Mexico, and Australia.

  • SEA Wire and Cable (Huntsville): A supplier of aerospace and military wire and cable products, working with major defense contractors and serving clients in over a dozen countries.

  • Silver Ships (Theodore): A manufacturer of aluminum workboats for government and commercial use, with recent expansions in production and customers in locations including Montenegro and the Philippines.

  • Special Shapes Refractory Co. (Bessemer): A producer of custom refractory components used in industrial sectors, exporting to markets such as France, India, and Argentina.

  • System Studies & Simulation Inc. (S³) (Huntsville): A defense contractor offering advanced flight training and technical services, with a presence in over two dozen international locations.

The ceremony also included a special recognition for Mike Lee of Page & Jones for his long-standing contributions to international logistics in Alabama. Lee was acknowledged for his work as a licensed Customs House Broker and his role in strengthening the state’s trade infrastructure.

The Alabama Department of Commerce’s Global Business Office provides resources to help companies expand internationally, including training and market access through its Export Alabama initiative.
