Montgomery, AL – In an official statement on Wednesday, Governor Kay Ivey revealed that over $40 million in state transportation funding is set to be allocated to cities and counties for various road and bridge projects. The funds are made available through the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program-II (ATRIP-II), established under the Rebuild Alabama Act. This act mandates ATRIP-II as an annual program, earmarking a minimum of $30 million from the Alabama Department of Transportation’s (ALDOT) share of new gas tax revenue for local interest projects on the state highway system.
Governor Ivey expressed her satisfaction with the ongoing implementation of the Rebuild Alabama Act, stating, “Through the continued, steadfast implementation of the Rebuild Alabama Act, I’m proud to announce the allocation of over $40 million in state transportation funding. This is a substantial investment that underscores our dedication to enhancing roads and bridges statewide. Alabamians deserve nothing short of excellence in their infrastructure, and Rebuild Alabama is continuing to deliver long-term results that are felt across every stretch of our state.”
A total of 26 projects were selected for funding, amounting to just over $40 million in state transportation funding. Notably, 18 of the awarded projects came from cities and counties contributing over $18 million in local funds. It’s worth noting that under the ATRIP-II program, there is no requirement for local governments to provide matching funds to be eligible.
Since its inception in 2019, the state has now granted more than $180 million in state transportation funds under ATRIP-II. The ATRIP-II Committee, established by the Rebuild Alabama Act, was responsible for selecting the projects. The announcement anticipates that several projects will be under contract during the 2024 fiscal year. However, all projects are mandated to move forward within two years of the funds being awarded.
