Governor Ivey Announces Retirement of Major General Sheryl Gordon, Selects Brigadier General David Pritchett as Next Leader of Alabama National Guard

Montgomery, AL – In a significant announcement, Governor Kay Ivey revealed the retirement of Major General Sheryl Gordon, marking the end of her distinguished six-year tenure as the adjutant general of the Alabama National Guard. Governor Ivey, acknowledging General Gordon’s impactful leadership, has chosen Alabama native Brigadier General David Pritchett as the successor to lead the Alabama National Guard.

General Gordon assumed command in 2017 under Governor Ivey’s appointment, contributing to Alabama’s status as a robust military community. Her tenure was marked by achievements such as securing the landing of F-35 Fighter Jets, providing security at the Southern Border, and responding promptly in times of crisis. General Gordon’s commitment ensured that the Alabama National Guard remained vigilant and prepared.

Governor Ivey praised General Gordon’s trailblazing and visionary leadership, emphasizing her decades of military service and steadfast commitment. The announcement commended General Gordon not only for being Alabama’s first female adjutant general but also for her enduring dedication to the state and the nation.

In 2022, Governor Ivey sought an extension for General Gordon’s service through 2023 to oversee critical leadership and project priorities. The collaborative efforts between the governor and General Gordon prepared for a smooth transition of command, scheduled for January.

Reflecting on her service, Major General Gordon expressed gratitude for supporting and equipping the outstanding Soldiers and Airmen of Alabama. Governor Ivey’s trust in her was acknowledged as the highest honor, and she extended her best wishes to General Pritchett, stating, “It Shall Be Done!”

Governor Ivey welcomed General David Pritchett, a Jefferson County native and Auburn alum, as the new adjutant general. Currently serving as the director of the joint staff for the Wyoming National Guard, General Pritchett’s return to Alabama is anticipated with enthusiasm. Governor Ivey emphasized his exceptional military experience and diverse leadership background, expressing confidence in his ability to contribute to the growth and success of the Alabama National Guard.

General Pritchett, with a wealth of awards and decorations, has a storied military career, including extensive service in Alabama. He expressed gratitude for the upcoming appointment, acknowledging the Alabama National Guard’s rich history of service.

The governor’s appointment of General Pritchett is set to take effect on January 1, 2024, with the official change of command ceremony scheduled for January 5, 2024. General Pritchett, an Auburn University graduate, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Administration and a Master of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College.

Governor Ivey looks forward to working with General Pritchett to ensure that Alabama stands ready to protect and serve. General Pritchett’s wife, Julie, hailing from Fort Payne, adds a local connection, and together, they have three adult children: Katelyn, Clay, and Anna Chris. The Alabama National Guard anticipates a seamless transition under General Pritchett’s leadership, continuing its legacy of service and commitment to the state and nation.
