Montgomery, AL – This week, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey announced the appointment of Alabama Senate President Pro Tempore Greg Reed as her Senior Advisor to Workforce Transformation. The new role positions Reed to guide the transition of the Department of Labor to the Department of Workforce, a shift aimed at enhancing the state’s workforce development efforts.
“I am proud to officially welcome Greg to the Ivey Administration,” Governor Ivey stated. “As my Senior Advisor to Workforce Transformation, he will be integral to the transition from the Department of Labor to the Department of Workforce and in setting the foundation for the new agency. Increasing our state’s labor force participation rate and setting us up for long-term success remains a priority for my Administration.”
Reed, who has represented Senate District 5 since 2010, currently serves as president pro tempore of the Alabama Senate, representing Fayette, Jefferson, Lamar, Tuscaloosa, and Walker counties. Governor Ivey highlighted his legislative contributions, including his support for workforce-related initiatives such as the CHOOSE Act, the Working for Alabama legislation, and the establishment of the Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences.
“Alabama is poised to chart a new path in workforce development and economic growth, and I am immensely grateful to Governor Kay Ivey for giving me the opportunity to be a part of her team,” Senator Reed said. “I could not be more excited for this new journey, and I look forward to building on the monumental steps Alabama has taken.”
The Department of Workforce, set to officially launch in the summer of 2025, will be led by Secretary Marty Redden during the transition. Governor Ivey praised Redden’s leadership, describing him as a model for state agency administration.
Reed’s appointment will take effect on January 1, 2025. Governor Ivey announced plans to call a special election for Senate District 5 to fill Reed’s vacated seat, with details forthcoming.
