Montgomery, AL – Governor Kay Ivey delivered remarks at the World Police and Fire Games (WPFG) 2025 Press Event held in the State Capitol’s Old House Chamber on Wednesday, April 2, 2025. The event highlighted Alabama’s preparations to host the international competition, which will take place from June 27 through July 6, 2025, in the Greater Birmingham area.
The WPFG is an international multi-sport event open to all current and retired public safety personnel in good standing, including law enforcement officers, firefighters, customs and corrections personnel, 9-1-1 dispatchers, crime scene investigators, and lifeguards. The games will feature a variety of competitions, ranging from specialized events such as Police Pistol Combat, Toughest Competitor Alive, and the Ultimate Firefighter, to traditional individual and team sports, including basketball, weightlifting, softball, cycling, golf, and soccer.
More than 8,500 athletes from over 70 countries are expected to compete in more than 70 sports across 20 venues throughout the Birmingham area. Organizers anticipate the event will generate an estimated economic impact of $65 million for the state of Alabama.
Governor Ivey was joined at the press event by World Police and Fire Games CEO DJ Mackovets, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Secretary Hal Taylor, Alabama Department of Corrections Commissioner John Hamm, and Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Commissioner Chris Blankenship, among others. Officials emphasized the significance of the event in showcasing Alabama’s hospitality and supporting the public safety community through competition and camaraderie.
The WPFG, held biennially, is one of the world’s largest multi-sport events, bringing together public safety professionals from around the globe to compete, build relationships, and promote physical fitness. Birmingham’s selection as the host city underscores its ability to accommodate major international sporting events and its commitment to honoring those who serve in public safety roles.
