Montgomery, AL – Governor Kay Ivey officially swore in Brigadier General (Ret.) Jeff Newton as the new commissioner of the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs (ADVA) on Thursday. The ceremony took place in the Governor’s Office, attended by Newton’s wife and members of the ADVA staff.
Newton’s appointment was announced earlier this week following the signing of Senate Bill 67, which aims to enhance services and support for Alabama’s 400,000 veterans. Governor Ivey expressed confidence in Newton’s leadership, emphasizing his commitment to serving veterans and their families.
“Commissioner Newton is already hitting the ground running to ensure Alabama best serves our 400,000 veterans, and I was proud to officially swear him in today,” said Governor Ivey. “It is an honor to serve our veterans – and their families – who have given so much for us, and I am pleased to do so alongside Commissioner Newton.”
Newton, a retired brigadier general, brings extensive military and leadership experience to the role. As commissioner, he will oversee veteran services, benefits, and initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for Alabama’s veteran community.
