This week’s Small Business Spotlight is on Healthy in Bama in Jacksonville! They love to provide education on living healthier lives. Healthy in Bama stocks their store with clean, toxin-free products made by small businesses, particularly companies in Alabama. Their Facebook and Instagram page has lots of recipes and daily tips on how to remove the unneeded toxins from your homes.

Bear and Sons

The owner of Healthy in Bama, Tressie Britton, sat down with me to tell me all about her business and the wide array of products she carries in her store.

  • Tammy (TL): How and when did your business begin?
  • Tressie (TB): Healthy in Bama actually started as a social media page. My daughters and I like to eat a lot and share pictures of our food and people were always asking for the recipe. We thought it would be a good idea to start a Facebook and Instagram page and we started sharing healthy tips and it just grew from that. After about a year, we had the idea to turn it into a brick and mortar store and things just fell into place!
  • TL: Tell me more about your location here in Jacksonville.
  • TB: We are located on the square, on Clinton St, right next to Get Personalized. For us, this has been a great location. It lets us be able to handle both businesses at the same time, our buildings connect so it’s been a really good location right in the middle of town.
  • TL: So you’ve actually got TWO small businesses! Tell me about Get Personalized.
  • TB: It’s been in Jacksonville for 32 years, we do embroidery, screen printing and vinyl as well. I think as of right now, we are the oldest embroidery and screen printing business in Jacksonville. We do lots of stuff for The Southerners, JSU, corporate work, churches, vacation bible schools. We stay very busy with that.
  • TL: What kind of things do you sell here at Healthy in Bama?
  • TB: We try to make everything we sell here has no artificial colors, no artificial fragrances. We really make sure that everything we bring in is “clean”. It’s not always all organic but it’s always free of fragrances. We try very hard to support other Alabama businesses so we have quite a few of those that we work with.
  • TL: Tell me more about the other local businesses you partner with.
  • TB: We partner with King’s Olive in Gadsden, they do olive oils and balsamic vinegars and we carry a few of their varieties of oils and vinegars here. We work with Called Coffee and Jerod has done some special blends for us. He’s done a Southerners blend, a Red Rooster blend, and a Healthy in Bama blend. We are working on some things for the fall, so maybe he can come up on a football Saturday and park his truck outside. We work with Piper & Leaf Tea, they’re a small company out of Huntsville. All of their things are sourced locally and they work with small farmers and we love working with them. We also partner with Steel City Pops out of Birmingham. All of their popsicles are farm to table and the only thing they don’t source locally is their organic cane sugar. They’re all gluten free and there’s no artificial colors or sweeteners, everything is as clean as popsicles can be!
  • TL: How can people find you in person and online?
  • TB: We are in the store Monday through Thursday 10:00 am – 5:00 pm and Friday 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. We also do classes here! We do some education classes, a lot Facebook lives, and we have a local artist who is coming in to do a painting class! We have a couple spots left, tickets are $20 each and you can purchase that from the link on our Healthy in Bama Facebook page. Space is limited to about 10 people for each of these classes to keep a little distance. We have Lunch and Learns so you can come by on your lunch break. The last one was gluten free doughnuts and they were delicious! You can always call us at 256-644-5047 and follow our Facebook page for the latest info.

See the full interview and store tour on my Facebook page to see for yourself all the unique items they offer, either as a gift or for yourself! They’ll even gift wrap for you! How easy is that?
I hope you enjoyed this Small Business Spotlight! Stay tuned until next week for the next local business!
