OXFORD, AL — Historic Main Street Oxford has been designated as a 2026 Accredited Main Street America program, recognizing the organization’s ongoing efforts in downtown revitalization, preservation-based economic development, and community engagement.

The designation is awarded annually by Main Street America and its partners to programs that meet national performance standards through the Main Street Approach, a framework focused on strengthening historic downtowns and commercial districts. According to the announcement, Historic Main Street Oxford’s performance was evaluated through assessments conducted by local leadership and Main Street Alabama, which partners with Main Street America to identify communities meeting national standards.

The accreditation reflects achievements in several categories, including community commitment, organizational leadership, sustainable funding, strategic programming, preservation-based economic development, and measurable results.

Historic Main Street Oxford reported continued growth and investment in 2025, including the opening of six new businesses and one expanding business within the district. The organization also documented more than $1 million in combined public and private downtown improvements during the year.

Additional efforts included annual events that attracted visitors to downtown Oxford, preservation initiatives such as historic walking tours and bronze marker installations, business development workshops, beautification projects, and volunteer programs. The organization also secured nearly $26,000 in grant funding and received statewide recognition through multiple awards.

Alton Craft said the accreditation reflects continued investment in the downtown district.

“Historic Main Street Oxford’s accreditation reflects the hard work, partnerships, and continued investment taking place in our downtown,” Craft said. “We are proud of the progress being made and remain committed to preserving and strengthening the heart of our community.”

Hunter Gentry also commented on the recognition, noting the collaboration between city leadership, volunteers, businesses, and community stakeholders.

“This accreditation reflects Historic Main Street Oxford’s continued commitment to preservation-based economic development and downtown revitalization,” Gentry said. “Historic Main Street Oxford is proud to once again meet the standards established by Main Street America.”

Main Street America reported that, nationwide in 2025, participating programs generated $9.4 billion in local reinvestment, facilitated the creation of more than 36,000 jobs, and rehabilitated over 10,000 historic buildings.
