Hobson City Receives Rebuild Alabama Grant for Road Improvements, Only Awarded Project in Calhoun County

Montgomery, AL – Governor Kay Ivey announced Thursday that more than $7.6 million in state funding is being awarded to cities and counties across Alabama for 26 transportation projects through the Alabama Department of Transportation’s Annual Grant Program under the Rebuild Alabama Act.

Among the projects selected in the first round of 2026 funding was Hobson City, which was the only municipality or area in Calhoun County to receive funding during this round of awards.

According to the announcement, Hobson City will receive $250,000 in state funding for the resurfacing of nine streets within the city limits, covering approximately one mile of roadway. The city also contributed $195 in local matching funds, bringing the total project cost to $250,195.

The grants are part of the Annual Grant Program established through the Rebuild Alabama Act, legislation overwhelmingly approved by the Alabama Legislature and signed into law by Governor Ivey in 2019. The law requires ALDOT to dedicate at least $10 million annually from the state’s share of gas tax revenue toward local transportation projects.

“If you are driving from one place to the next in our state, it is hard not to spot a blue Rebuild Alabama sign along the way. That is because we have road and bridge projects happening in all 67 counties,” Ivey said. “These grants are giving our local communities the support they need to take on critical projects. We are going to keep delivering results you can see mile after mile across our state.”

State officials said the 2026 Annual Grant Program will ultimately distribute $15 million statewide this year, which is $5 million more than the minimum amount required under the Rebuild Alabama Act. Additional grant awards are expected to be announced later this year.

The first round of awards totals approximately $7.6 million in state funding, with local governments contributing more than $1.9 million in matching funds. All approved projects are required to move forward within one year of receiving funding.

Since the Rebuild Alabama Act was enacted, ALDOT’s Annual Grant Program has awarded more than $78 million in transportation funding for local infrastructure projects throughout Alabama.

Additional information about the grant program is available through the Alabama Department of Transportation Rebuild Alabama Annual Grant Program.
