TALLADEGA – Oxford placed four scorers in double figures, including eighth-grade Kaylen Kenney for the first time in her career, and took down Talladega 61-34 Tuesday night.

Kenney and County Tournament MVP Kaleah Taylor both scored 10 points. Kenney had eight in the first half. LaMya McGrue led all scorers with 17 points. Xai Whitfield had 12.

“She put a lot of what we have been working on in practice into action tonight,” Oxford coach Melissa Bennett said of Kenney. “She played very within herself and under control.”

Lauren Ellard returned to the Oxford rotation in the game and although she didn’t score she did grab several rebounds.

ANNISTON 44, CLEBURNE COUNTY 41: Faith Brown became the second Cleburne County player this season to reach the 1,000-point plateau, but Taysia West scored 10 of her 14 points in the second half and A’Kayla Perry hit three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as Anniston rallied to pull out the victory.

The Lady Tigers led 22-14 at halftime before Anniston came to life in the second half. The Lady Bulldogs doubled their offensive production and held Cleburne County to less than its first-half output.

Brown needed five points to reach the milestone and got it with her third bucket of the game, in the second quarter. Injured teammate Hailey Price joined the club over the Christmas holiday. 

The sophomore guard, who wanted to hit the milestone at home in front of family and friends, finished with 13 points. Brooklyn McDaniel was the Lady Tigers’ leading scorer with 14 points, going 7-for-8 from the free throw line in the second half.

The two teams will be seeded 2 and 3 in the upcoming area tournament.

SAND ROCK 82, PIEDMONT 45: Caley Garrett (7) and Lanie Henderson (6) scored 24 and 31 points, respectively, and combined for 13 of Sand Rock’s 16 3-pointers. Garrett hit four treys in the first quarter to help the home team open a 25-9 lead and three in the fourth quarter as they closed it out. Henderson hit five 3s in the first half.

Garrett finished with 24 points. Henderson had a game-high 31.

RAGLAND 63, FAITH CHRISTIAN 12: Cadence Buchanan scored 22 points, Rylee Mickler had 15 and the Lady Purple Devils (19-2) held Faith to two points in the second half to complete the 8-0 sweep of their area schedule.

Buchanan scored 19 of her points in the first half, while Mickler had 10 in the second. 

“I am really proud of our effort on defense tonight,” Ragland coach Sawyer Merritt said. “We were able to rotate our lineup a good bit and I felt like each group played great defensively.”
