Montgomery, AL – On Wednesday, April 9, 2025, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) initiated an investigation following the receipt of suspicious letters by several members of the Alabama House of Representatives. The letters, which arrived around 9:15 a.m., contained explicit pornographic images.
ALEA agents promptly identified a person of interest and are actively pursuing leads to resolve the situation. At this time, no further details have been released as the investigation continues.
Speaker of the House, Nathaniel Ledbetter, expressed concern over the incident, stating that packages containing inappropriate materials had been received by several House members. He assured that these packages were handed over to ALEA’s State Bureau of Investigation and expressed full confidence in the agency’s ability to conduct a thorough investigation.
As of now, only members of the House of Representatives have been targeted; no Senate members have reported receiving such materials. The investigation remains ongoing, and ALEA has not provided additional information regarding potential suspects or motives.
This incident has raised concerns about the security and safety of legislative communications. ALEA continues to work diligently to uncover the source of these materials and prevent any future occurrences.
