JACKSONVILLE, AL — The Jacksonville City Schools Board of Education approved the transfer of school property adjacent to Kitty Stone Elementary School to the City of Jacksonville during its June 9 meeting, clearing the way for construction of a new roadway designed to improve traffic flow around the campus.
The board unanimously approved a recommendation to surplus the property and donate it to the city for the roadway project. School officials said the transfer was the final step needed before construction could begin. Discussion during the meeting focused on future traffic patterns, including potential use of the roadway for car rider and bus traffic, as well as safety considerations for students and pedestrians.
Superintendent Dr. Barber also presented several business items that received board approval, including acceptance of the Alabama CMP Cooperative Supplemental Grocery Bid for the 2026-27 school year and a produce contract with Forestwood Farms, which was the sole bidder for the upcoming year.
Board members approved Jacksonville City Schools’ 2026-27 salary schedules and approved personnel items A through Q, which included several staffing changes, retirements and promotions. During discussion, district leaders recognized the contributions of retiring employees, including Jennifer Curl and Dr. Waits, and thanked them for their years of service to Jacksonville City Schools.
The board also received an update on district operations. Officials reported that summer school is underway, summer meal distribution has begun, and interviews are being conducted for a lead nurse position. The district is also accepting applications for a high school principal position, with an interview committee expected to assist in the selection process.
Additionally, board members discussed teacher instructional support funding. Administrators confirmed that teachers receive $1,000 annually for classroom materials and supplies, with new funding beginning Oct. 1.
The next Jacksonville City Schools Board of Education meeting is scheduled for June 30 at 2 p.m.
