JACKSONVILLE, AL – The Jacksonville City Council held its regular meeting on October 29, 2025, addressing several significant agenda items including historical markers, a new fire station, and ongoing discussions about establishing a freestanding emergency room in the community.
Historical Markers Progress
Wesley Bishop provided an update on three historical marker projects honoring Rick Bragg, Lily Ledbetter, and Theodore Burt Fox. The Rick Bragg marker is currently under construction with placement planned at the library, while the markers for Ledbetter and Fox will be pursued through the Alabama Historical Association, with costs ranging from $2,800 to $3,400 including signposts.
For placement, the Ledbetter marker was recommended for the intersection of Ladiga Trail and Highway 204, while the Fox marker is being considered for City Hall grounds, either at the main intersection or near the flagpole.
Emergency Room Deliberations
The council continued discussions on bringing a freestanding emergency room to Jacksonville, with the city having worked toward this goal since the hospital closed in 2018. Council members indicated that more than one healthcare provider has expressed interest in establishing services in the area.
The council plans to send letters to interested hospitals inviting them to present proposals within three to four weeks, allowing citizens to attend and hear what each provider can offer beyond basic emergency services. Council members emphasized they want to make the decision that best serves Jacksonville residents rather than rushing after years of work on the issue.
Infrastructure Approvals
The council unanimously approved several key items:
- Rejected bids for the Eastwood Safe Room project
- Awarded a contract to SAGA Construction LLC for the new Fire Station No. 2, which will serve the north end of town
- Approved personnel changes including Scout Harris’s transfer to Records and Office Clerk in the Fire Department and the employment of Maurine Haley Burnett as a part-time public safety communications officer
Personnel Transitions
The meeting marked one of the final sessions for outgoing Mayor Johnny L. Smith and Council President Tony K. Taylor. Multiple council members and community leaders, including Jacksonville City Schools Superintendent Dr. Michael Barton and Weaver Mayor Jeff Clendenning, thanked both officials for their years of service and dedication to the community.
Additional Business
The council passed Ordinance No. O-672-25, which amends regulations regarding the wrecker rotation list, and approved the Jacksonville Police Department Towing and Recovery Policy.
The next council meeting will include the swearing-in of new officials following the recent municipal election.
