Jacksonville, AL – The Jacksonville City Council convened for a called meeting on March 4, 2025, to discuss amendments to ongoing infrastructure projects, approve funding allocations, and address additional city business.
Agenda and Amendments
Council members approved an amended agenda that included the addition of a $119,935.94 purchase for the street department from Samson Equipment Company. The amendment was unanimously approved, and the agenda was adopted.
George Douthit Sidewalk Project
The Council moved to rescind Amendment No. 2 to JPWP#23-111, the George Douthit Sidewalk Project. This decision was made following discussions on project challenges, including construction delays due to weather and necessary corrections to sidewalk finishes. Minor cosmetic issues, such as mismatched expansion joints and surface imperfections caused by environmental factors, were also highlighted. Contractors have requested additional days to complete the work, and the council anticipates project completion by the end of March.
Vann Street, 6th Street, and 6th Avenue Paving Project
Council members approved Amendment No. 1 to JPWP#25-133, which expands the scope of the Vann Street, 6th Street, and 6th Avenue Paving Project to include paving a portion of the Jacksonville Community Center parking lot. This motion passed unanimously after ensuring that disruptions to public access would be minimized during construction.
Additional Business
A city official announced their acceptance of a position at Jacksonville State University (JSU) and discussed the possibility of remaining involved in city operations on a limited basis. The council acknowledged the transition and expressed appreciation for their contributions.
Further updates were provided on sidewalk improvements, including adjustments to a crosswalk near Jacksonville Elementary School to align with accessibility requirements. The council also discussed minor repairs, such as fixing sidewalk sections affected by weather and wildlife.
