Chief Marcus Wood presented a comprehensive proposal for implementing ZeroEyes, an AI-powered weapon detection system that would monitor the district’s camera network. The technology uses artificial intelligence to identify weapons on campus and immediately alert law enforcement and school officials.

“In school shootings, seconds and minutes matter,” Chief Wood told the board. The system would provide real-time tracking of potential threats through a “breadcrumb” system that follows individuals through the building via connected cameras.

The police department secured grant funding for the first two years of the proposed five-year contract. The estimated cost for 69 cameras across district facilities would require the city and school system to potentially split the third-year costs, though additional grant funding is being pursued through the Department of Justice.

The technology includes human verification to prevent false alarms and is FERPA compliant, only accessing cameras when weapons are detected. Several school districts nationwide have implemented similar systems.

Cell Phone Policy Updated

Superintendent Dr. Barber recommended approval of revised Board Policy 8.63 regarding cell phone and audio-video device use, bringing the district into compliance with new state law requirements. The policy must be implemented by July 1, 2025, and will significantly change how students can use personal devices, particularly at the high school level.

The board unanimously approved the policy revision, with plans to notify parents through social media and other communication channels about the changes all Alabama students will face in the coming school year.

Personnel and Salary Changes

The board approved the 2025-2026 salary schedules and processed extensive personnel items covering positions A through P. Superintendent Dr. Barber noted the large number of retirements this year, which had been anticipated due to salary adjustments during the ESSER funding period and employees reaching retirement eligibility.

Facilities and Program Updates

Dr. Barber provided updates on several ongoing projects:

  • Performing Arts Building: Construction is progressing well with completion expected when school starts. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned featuring the jazz band.
  • HVAC System: A new boiler has been installed at the high school, with the chilling tower scheduled for installation next week. The project required temporary air conditioning shutdowns.
  • Drainage Issues: The district is working with the county engineer to address water drainage problems behind Kitty Stone Elementary’s playground equipment.
  • JSU Partnership: The district is developing a partnership with Jacksonville State University to provide nursing students with school nurse experience.

Summer Programs Show Strong Participation

The district reported impressive attendance figures for summer programs:

  • Elementary summer school: 78 students with 95% perfect attendance
  • High school summer school: 52 students enrolled
  • Summer feeding program: 3,732 total meals served across multiple locations including the community center, Boys and Girls Club, and schools

Athletic programs have also seen strong participation, with coaches encouraging student-athletes to utilize the meal programs during summer workouts.

Community Partnerships

Board members recognized several community initiatives, including a successful grant-funded food distribution program serving 100 families through collaboration with Jacksonville First United Methodist Church. The next distribution is scheduled for Tuesday, June 17.

Counselor Sherry Lassiter was recognized for her “Happy Hair Camp” program, which introduced children to cosmetology and barbering careers, including plans for free community haircuts.

Next Meeting

The board confirmed their next meeting for Monday, June 30, 2025, at 3:30 PM to address additional personnel items before Dr. Barber’s planned vacation from July 8-16.

The meeting concluded with board members expressing appreciation for staff dedication and encouraging everyone to enjoy their summer break.
