Dr. Howard’s departure comes as he has been selected to assume the role of Superintendent at Lee County schools, a position he was appointed to on November 14. Despite the brevity of his time with Jacksonville City Schools, Howard’s impact has been recognized by the school board and the community.

His last day with Jacksonville City Schools is set for December 31, 2023, as he transitions to his new responsibilities in Lee County. Board member Phyllis Morrison expressed appreciation for Howard’s contributions, saying, “We thank you for everything. You came on board and hit the ground running to further the Jacksonville City Schools system, and we wish the best for you and your family.”

Board Vice President Jeff Gossett acknowledged the need for a smooth transition, stating, “An interim will be appointed soon, and a search for a new superintendent will begin promptly.” The board’s commitment to a swift and efficient selection process reflects their dedication to maintaining the positive momentum within the Jacksonville City Schools system.

As the school community bids farewell to Dr. Mike Howard, the focus now shifts to the future leadership of Jacksonville City Schools, with anticipation for continued growth and success.
