Jacksonville Hwy 21 Construction: Expect Vehicle and Pedestrian Traffic Impacts

Hwy 21 Construction

Jacksonville, AL – Construction began Monday, July 21, along Hwy 21 (Pelham Road North) between Hwy 204 and 11th Street NW in Jacksonville, AL, as part of a joint initiative between Jacksonville State University (JSU) and the City of Jacksonville. The work is part of a broader campus transformation effort focused on improving pedestrian safety.

Funded by the Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP), the road and sidewalk revitalization project is expected to continue for approximately 90 days, with completion anticipated by mid-October.

The construction will impact both vehicle and pedestrian traffic. JSU and city officials encourage the public to be mindful of altered routes, increased foot traffic, and new safety guidelines.

To help ensure safety during the construction period, JSU has issued several reminders for students, staff, and the community:

  • General Precautions: Plan ahead and allow extra time for travel. Stay alert for unexpected traffic patterns, including bicycles and scooters traveling in unusual directions.

  • Bicycles & Scooters: Riders must obey all traffic laws. Helmets and reflective clothing are recommended, and all bikes and scooters on JSU property should be registered with Parking Services.

  • Pedestrian Safety: Cross only at designated crosswalks. Make eye contact with drivers before crossing, avoid distractions like phones, and wear visible clothing.

  • Driving Guidelines: Drive slowly, remain attentive, and follow all posted speed limits. Use only designated parking zones and avoid blocking travel lanes.

  • Alternative Transportation: JSU Ride, a free on-campus transportation service, is available for students and staff.

The construction is a proactive step toward long-term safety and accessibility improvements on and around the JSU campus. Officials will continue to monitor traffic and pedestrian flow throughout the project duration.
