Jacksonville Marching Southerners Honor WWII Heroes at St. James American Cemetery and Sainte-Mère-Église Parade

Normandy, France — The Marching Southerners, Jacksonville State University’s renowned marching band, recently delivered a poignant performance at an official public ceremony held at St. James American Cemetery. Collaborating with other ensembles, choirs, and JROTC students, the band paid tribute to the brave men and women who fought to liberate Western Europe during World War II.

“This was an incredible and proud moment for our students,” remarked Dr. Ken Bodiford, Jax State Director of Bands. “We were deeply honored to pay tribute to the courageous men and women who fought to liberate Western Europe and change the course of World War II.”

The ceremony, held in the solemn grounds of the American Cemetery, was a moving tribute to the fallen heroes of the war. The performance by The Marching Southerners, known for their precision and emotional depth, added a profound layer to the event, bringing history to life through their music.

In addition to their performance at the cemetery, the band had the honor of participating in a parade on Saturday in Sainte-Mère-Église, the first village liberated by American troops following the D-Day landings. The parade was a jubilant celebration of freedom and a reminder of the village’s significant place in history.

This isn’t the first time The Marching Southerners have represented Jacksonville State University on an international stage. In 2012, they led the parade celebrating Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee in London, commemorating her 60th year on the throne. Four years later, in 2016, they traveled to Honolulu, Hawaii, to play at the 75th Anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. In 2019, the band marched in the World Peace Day Parade in the Vatican, where they received a blessing from the Pope.

The band’s illustrious history of high-profile performances is matched by their recent accolade. In December 2022, The Marching Southerners were awarded the prestigious Sudler Trophy, the highest honor given to college marching bands. This award, presented biennially, recognized Jax State as the smallest university ever to win the trophy in its 40-year history.

The Marching Southerners continue to embody excellence and dedication, using their music to honor history and inspire future generations. Their recent performances in Normandy are a testament to their talent and their commitment to remembering the sacrifices made for freedom.
