Jacksonville, AL – Jacksonville State head football coach Charles Kelly addressed the media this week ahead of the Gamecocks’ season opener against UCF, sharing reflections on training camp, roster changes, and team leadership.

Kelly emphasized the importance of building strong habits during camp, noting that the program’s focus has been on developing consistency and preparing for the entire season rather than a single opponent. “Training camp is about building a toolbox,” he said. “I’ve been very pleased with how our players have gone about their business.”

The Gamecocks enter the season with significant roster turnover, including 51 new players. Kelly said that while this presents challenges, it is also a common reality in college football’s transfer portal era. “We know the type of talent that’s out there, and we’re all evaluating the same players,” he explained.

One key announcement was the naming of quarterback Gavin as the starter. Kelly described him as a “big, athletic” player with strong arm talent who has earned the respect of his teammates. Still, he stressed confidence in all three quarterbacks on the roster.

The opener against UCF marks Kelly’s first game as Jacksonville State’s head coach. While acknowledging the significance, he shifted the focus toward the challenge of facing a program led by Scott Frost, whom he praised for his past success at UCF and Nebraska.

Kelly also addressed the team’s upcoming schedule, which includes four midweek games. He said the change in routine requires adjustments but offers increased visibility for the program. “The more people that see us play, the more value it creates for our players and our university,” he said.

Players also spoke on leadership and preparation. Offensive lineman Bubba Grayson discussed the demanding expectations of the coaching staff, while wide receiver Brock Rex Steiner and safety Trevor Woods highlighted the leadership and talent Gavin has brought to the team.

Kelly concluded by outlining his vision for the season: “When people watch our football team, we want them to say they are fast, physical, tough, disciplined, and they will compete. It’s not about results—it’s about the grind.”
