Jacksonville, AL – Jacksonville State University (Jax State) proudly announced its advancement to the Network Leader phase of the FirstGen Forward Network, a national initiative aimed at enhancing the success of first-generation college students. This milestone highlights Jax State’s ongoing commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive environment for students who are the first in their families to attend college.
The FirstGen Forward Network, established by NASPA and The Suder Foundation, employs a three-phase approach to help institutions improve outcomes for first-generation students. By progressing to the Network Leader phase, Jax State has demonstrated its ability to implement sustainable, student-focused strategies across campus.
“At Jacksonville State University, we are committed to empowering first-generation students by providing the resources and support necessary for their academic and personal success,” said Dr. Christie Shelton, Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs at Jax State. “Advancing to the Network Leader phase of the FirstGen Forward Network reflects our approach to addressing the unique challenges first-generation students face and our ongoing efforts to create an environment where all students can thrive.”
As a Network Leader, Jax State will focus on transforming its infrastructure and support systems to better serve first-generation students. The university will gain access to diagnostic tools, expert guidance, data-driven solutions, and resources that will aid in crafting evidence-based strategies tailored to its students’ needs.
This achievement underscores Jax State’s dedication to closing the achievement gap between first-generation students and their peers, improving enrollment and retention rates, and fostering overall student success.
The FirstGen Forward Network provides higher education institutions with a collaborative framework to share best practices, enhance resources, and support first-generation students. By progressing through its phases, universities can build sustainable models that address the unique challenges faced by this student population.
Jax State’s advancement to the Network Leader phase reflects its role as a champion for first-generation student success and its commitment to creating pathways for academic achievement and personal growth.
