Per Dr. Don C. Killingsworth, Jr., President, Jacksonville State University (JSU) remains dedicated to the continued operation and programming of the Little River Canyon Center, despite the recent announcement that the National Park Service (NPS) office at the center will close on December 31, 2025.
JSU’s role in managing and maintaining the Canyon Center will remain unchanged, ensuring that educational programs, conservation initiatives, and community engagement efforts continue without disruption. The university has reaffirmed that the center will persist as a hub for research, outdoor recreation, and environmental stewardship for visitors, students, and faculty alike.
“As we move forward, we will work closely with our partners and stakeholders to evaluate any potential impacts and ensure the continued success of this important facility,” JSU stated in a release. “We appreciate the ongoing support of our community and look forward to many more years of serving the public at the Little River Canyon Center.”
Since its opening in 2009, the Little River Canyon Center has served as a key educational and recreational facility in Northeast Alabama. Located in Fort Payne and adjoining the Little River Canyon National Preserve, the center boasts a variety of amenities, including:
- A Grand Hall
- HD movie theater
- Gift shop
- Natural history library
- Interactive exhibits
- Classrooms
- Outdoor amphitheater
- Scenic trails for exploration and learning
Throughout the year, the center hosts concerts, workshops, guided hikes, lectures, and other activities for students and visitors of all ages. While a portion of the facility is leased to the National Park Service, JSU retains full responsibility for its overall management, operations, and programming.
The Canyon Center operates Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Central Time) and is available for event rentals, including meetings, corporate retreats, and special gatherings. A model of sustainability, the building has earned LEED Silver Certification for its innovative environmental design, which incorporates geothermal heating and cooling, recycled materials, and enhanced insulation.
