Jax State’s Dr. Mark Fagan Publishes Book on History and Economic Impact of The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail

Jacksonville, AL – Jacksonville State University (JSU) proudly celebrates the achievements of Dr. Mark Fagan, an esteemed professor emeritus and alumnus, who recently launched the second edition of his acclaimed book, The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail: Its History and Economic Impact. This latest edition, featuring a foreword by Dr. David G. Bronner, CEO of the Retirement Systems of Alabama (RSA), expands on the project’s 34-year journey as one of the world’s premier golf destinations and its profound economic influence.

Initiated by RSA in 1990 under Dr. Bronner’s visionary leadership, The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail remains a groundbreaking endeavor in statewide economic development. Comprising 11 sites across Alabama, the Trail encompasses 450 golf holes, eight resort hotels, and six world-class spas, making it the largest collection of golf courses developed in a single project in history.

Each site on The Trail showcases Alabama’s diverse terrain—from mountains to the coast—and has been strategically designed to attract golfers worldwide. Private developers and local governments played pivotal roles, contributing land and infrastructure support to foster job creation and increase tax revenue.

“The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail is not just a collection of golf courses; it’s a testament to strategic vision and collaborative effort,” remarked Dr. Fagan. His book details the Trail’s evolution, including subsequent developments such as residential and commercial expansions adjacent to each site, which have further bolstered local economies.
