Jacksonville, AL – Jacksonville State University (JSU) has announced significant changes to its Board of Trustees, including the creation of two new at-large positions and the appointment of two new board members. These changes are aimed at enhancing statewide and national representation while reinforcing the university’s commitment to institutional growth and student success.
To expand its reach, the Board has introduced both an in-state at-large and an out-of-state at-large position. Senator Vivian Davis Figures, who has represented District 1 on the Board since 2012, has been appointed to the newly created in-state at-large seat and will continue serving as Vice Chair. Additionally, two long-serving trustees—Clarence W. Daugette III (District 4) and Gale Saxon Main (District 2)—have been reappointed to the roles they have held since 2012.
The Board also welcomes two new members. Cheryl L. Orange has been confirmed to serve as the out-of-state at-large trustee, while Loring White has been appointed to represent District 1, succeeding Senator Figures in that role.
“I’m incredibly proud of the leadership we have on our Board of Trustees,” said Dr. Don C. Killingsworth, Jr., President of Jacksonville State University. “We’re grateful to Governor Ivey and the Alabama Senate for their continued support of Jacksonville State and for their efforts in these appointments and confirmations. Cheryl Orange and Loring White bring not only impressive professional experience but also a deep personal connection to Jax State. Their insight will be a valuable asset as we continue to grow. I’m especially thankful for the reappointment of Senator Figures, Clarence Daugette, and Gale Main—three leaders who have been instrumental in guiding the university forward over the past several years. Their continued service ensures a strong foundation as we look to the future.”
Cheryl L. Bevelle-Orange is a distinguished technology executive with over 30 years of corporate leadership experience, having held senior roles at FedEx and Becton Dickinson. A two-time JSU graduate and former Vice President of Scholarships for the JSU Black Alumni Chapter, she is widely recognized for her expertise in innovation, compliance, and vendor strategy. Originally from Bessemer, Alabama, Orange’s commitment to JSU has been longstanding.
Loring White, a 1978 JSU graduate, is a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist with deep roots in education and workforce development. A former student-athlete and coach, White built Capitol Business Equipment into a nationally recognized company before its integration with Owl Services, a firm generating over $1 billion in annual revenue. He also leads multiple ventures in agriculture and timber and is actively involved in state economic initiatives.
These strategic Board appointments underscore JSU’s mission to strengthen leadership representation while broadening perspectives across the state and beyond. By adding in-state and out-of-state at-large positions, the university acknowledges its growing influence and dedication to serving a wider community. These enhancements position the Board to effectively steer JSU’s continued expansion and commitment to academic excellence.
