Jacksonville State University Recognized As Alabama’s Top Producer of Teachers

Jacksonville, AL – Jacksonville State University (Jax State) has been named the leading producer of new teachers in Alabama, according to the latest data from the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) for the 2022-23 academic year. The university prepared 295 new educators, surpassing all other institutions in the state and producing 31% more newly trained teachers than the next highest institution.

“At Jax State, we take great pride in preparing the next generation of educators who will shape the future of Alabama’s schools,” said Jax State President Dr. Don C. Killingsworth, Jr. “Our faculty and staff are committed to providing top-tier training that equips our graduates with the skills, knowledge, and passion needed to make a meaningful impact in classrooms across the state.”

The ALSDE data shows that Jax State led teacher preparation efforts with 245 students completing Class B programs, which provide undergraduate teacher certification, and 50 students completing Alternative A programs, a graduate-level certification pathway. These numbers position Jax State as the top institution for producing new educators in Alabama.

The university’s recognition is further supported by national Title II teacher preparation data, which is the only comprehensive federal collection of teacher credentialing information. ALSDE reports this data annually to the U.S. Department of Education, reinforcing Jax State’s status as the state’s top institution for new teacher preparation.

These rankings highlight Jax State’s commitment to addressing Alabama’s teacher shortage by supplying highly qualified educators to schools across the state. The university’s success is attributed to innovative training programs, hands-on classroom experience, and strong partnerships with school districts.

“Jax State’s teacher candidates enter the workforce ready to make an immediate difference,” said Dr. Kimberly S. Gaiters-White, Dean of the College of Education and Professional Studies. “Our focus on experiential learning, mentorship, and real-world classroom experience ensures that our graduates are well-equipped to inspire and educate Alabama’s students.”

As Alabama continues efforts to strengthen its education workforce, Jax State remains at the forefront of teacher preparation, providing highly trained educators who will shape the future of learning across the state.
