Jacksonville State University Renames and Expands Graduate Program to Reflect Evolving Sports Industry

Jacksonville State Updates Master’s Program to Reflect Expanding Landscape of the Sports Industry

Jacksonville, AL – Jacksonville State University has announced a name change and curriculum update for its graduate program in sport management. Formerly known as the Master of Science in Sport Management, the program will now be called the Master of Science in Sports Industry, a move designed to reflect the expanding landscape of careers in the sports field.

The program, housed in JSU’s College of Health Professions and Wellness, remains a 30-hour graduate degree aimed at preparing students for leadership roles. However, the revised scope broadens the focus beyond traditional management training to include communication, marketing, data analytics, and economic development. These updates align with the rise of digital media, sports tourism, and diversified revenue streams in the modern sports ecosystem.

“While management remains a key component of our program, we’re taking a more contemporary approach that goes beyond the administrative and operational side of sports,” said Dr. Allen Gilbert, Associate Professor of Sport Management and Coordinator of the program. “The new name better reflects our mission to prepare students for all facets of the sports industry—whether that’s working with professional teams, media outlets, athletic departments, or event organizations.”

Students may pursue a general Master of Science in Sports Industry or choose one of two concentrations: Sport Management or Sport Communication. These tracks allow for targeted skill development based on individual career goals. The program also offers a hybrid course format, giving students the flexibility to complete coursework online or in person.

Graduates of the program have gone on to work in collegiate and professional sports, communications, facility management, and corporate partnerships, bolstering the program’s reputation for strong graduate outcomes and industry relevance.
