Jacksonville, AL — Jacksonville State University recently hosted a heartfelt ceremony to unveil a new painting titled Angle Hall, a tribute to the life and legacy of longtime faculty member and administrator Dr. Christopher H. Horsfield. Commissioned by the Horsfield family, the artwork now hangs in the Executive Conference Room of Angle Hall, the building Dr. Horsfield helped shape both literally and symbolically during his decades of service to the university.

Dr. Horsfield joined Jacksonville State in 1966 as head of the Department of Mathematics and retired in 1998 as Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Widely respected for his leadership and devotion to academic excellence, he was known for urging students to “learn the basics,” a philosophy that mirrored his belief in strong educational foundations—a principle also embodied by Angle Hall, one of the university’s most iconic buildings.

The painting was created by JSU alumnus Severe Threats, a product of the university’s “On to JSU” initiative. His work is known for its emotional depth and connection to place, and this piece is no exception. Threats’ depiction of Angle Hallblends architectural realism with symbolic reverence, illustrating not only the building’s stature on campus but also the enduring values it represents. His personal journey—from student to artist—adds another layer of significance to the project.

“The selection of Severe Threats for this commission was deeply intentional,” said a university representative at the ceremony. “His artistry, his roots at JSU, and his respect for campus heritage made him the perfect choice to bring this vision to life.”

The Horsfield family has long-standing and meaningful ties to Jacksonville State. Dr. Horsfield’s wife, Dorothy Horsfield, is a two-time alumna, earning her degrees in Secondary Education and the Arts in the mid-1960s. His daughter, Emily Horsfield White, currently serves as the university’s registrar and holds three degrees from JSU. His son, Michael Horsfield, and daughter-in-law, Melisa Horsfield, are also graduates, having studied Business Management and Elementary Education respectively.

The legacy continues through the next generation. Dr. Horsfield’s grandchildren, Andrew Horsfield, Christopher White, and Chloe White, have each maintained a connection to the university. Both Christopher (2020) and Chloe (2024) have earned Bachelor of Science degrees from JSU.

In dedicating this artwork, the Horsfield family sought to honor a man who not only gave his career to education but whose belief in foundational learning continues to inspire. The painting stands as a powerful tribute to his memory and a symbol of the family’s enduring connection to Jacksonville State University.

Angle Hall will serve as a lasting reminder of the contributions of one educator—and one family—whose commitment to JSU spans generations.
