Jacksonville, AL – As originally reported by Brett Buckner with JSU’s media department, more than 100 military veterans living in nursing homes and assisted living facilities across a 15-county region will soon receive care packages as part of an outreach effort led by Jacksonville State University’s Victory Center.
The Veteran Care Package initiative is designed to provide comfort items and essential supplies while reminding veterans that their service and sacrifices are remembered by the communities they once served.
“The goal is simple but meaningful — to provide comfort, appreciation, and connection,” said Christine Franklin, Victory Workforce Development Services Specialist. “Many of the veterans we serve may not receive frequent visitors, so we want them to feel seen, valued, and remembered by the community they once served.”
Staff members and volunteers with the Victory Center have already assembled 100 care packages. Each box contains hygiene items, comfort supplies, snacks, and small essentials such as word puzzles intended to make daily life a little easier for veterans living in long-term care facilities. The packages also include messages of gratitude thanking veterans for their service.
Franklin, an Air Force veteran herself, said the initiative holds personal significance.
“These packages mean more than what’s inside the bag,” Franklin said. “They represent connection. They represent gratitude. For many veterans in nursing homes, knowing that their community took the time to assemble something specifically for them can truly lift their spirits.”
Community participation has played a key role in the project’s success. Donations and volunteer support have come from several organizations, including American Legion Post 57, Jacksonville Christian Outreach Center, Alabama Specialty Products Inc., Alabama Power, and Southwire Company.
Alabama Power and Alabama Specialty Products Inc. each donated $500 worth of goods, while the American Legion contributed $250 toward the effort.
In addition to financial support, veterans’ organizations from across the region recently visited the Victory Center to help assemble the care packages.
“These collaborative efforts highlight the strong network of support within our community,” Franklin said, “and our shared commitment to serving those who have served our country.”
Distribution of the care packages is scheduled to begin this week.
The Victory Center operates as a collaboration between Jacksonville State University and community partners to provide mental and physical health services, training opportunities, and support programs for veterans, reservists, and their families. Through programs like the Veteran Care Package initiative, the center works to ensure that those who served continue to receive support long after their time in uniform has ended.
