JACKSONVILLE — Every day brings us closer to Halloween’s ghosts, ghouls and goblins, but the city’s Parks and Recreation Department has devised a “No Tricks, Just Treats” week to keep that creepy crew entertained.

The week’s highlight event is Boots and BBQ on Oct. 29 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Public Square, a fundraiser for Starkey Hearing Foundation co-sponsored by the Delta Zeta sorority of Jacksonville State University. The event includes live music and square dancing (with the help of a professional square-dance caller), and fresh-made barbecue will be available throughout.

Free horse-drawn carriage rides will run from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Dr. Francis Medical Museum, located at 207 Gayle Ave SW, and the evening will end with the “Haunted Jacksonville Walking Ghost Tours,” a free event courtesy of the Jacksonville Public Library. The tours start at the library, located at 200 Pelham Rd S., at 8:30 p.m.

The week begins with a “Volleyboo” invitational tournament at the city Community Center, located at 501 Alexandria Rd SW, on Saturday, Oct. 23. Volleyball teams from grades three through seven will compete throughout the day, while families and other teams can enjoy concessions. Admission is just $2, games start at 9 a.m.

The “Not So Haunted” Halloween trail trek will be held Oct. 26, offering a special chance for children 12 and younger (with adult accompaniment) to take a spooky trip along the Creekside and Chief Ladiga Trails after dark. Treats will be handed out along the way, and there might be a few tricks to keep things interesting. Admission is $5 per child, and admission is free for accompanying adults. The trek is from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and starts at the north side of the Community center.
