Jacksonville, AL – Journey of Hope, organized by The Ability Experience, is a cross-country cycling event that raises awareness and support for people with disabilities. This group of 31 cyclists and 7 crew members is part of one of two Journey of Hope teams riding different routes across the country. Averaging 75 miles per day, they are cycling from San Francisco to Washington, D.C., dedicating their summer to enhancing the lives of people with disabilities through grant funding and community engagement. Along the way, Friendship Visits will give team members meaningful opportunities to connect and build relationships with the very individuals they are riding in support of.
Combined with corporate sponsorships, the 2025 Journey of Hope teams will raise more than $450,000 for people with disabilities across the nation.
One standout member of the Journey of Hope team is James Nichols, who is proudly making history as the first cyclist from the Delta Epsilon chapter of Pi Kappa Phi at Jacksonville State University. A Jacksonville local, James brings both hometown pride and trailblazing spirit to the team. His participation not only marks a milestone for his chapter, but also reflects his deep commitment to service and inclusion. As he rides across the country, James carries the support of his community and sets an inspiring example for future brothers from Delta Epsilon to follow in his footsteps.
He was inspired to join after his former philanthropy chairman introduced him to the opportunity. Wanting to be a role model for his chapter and connect with individuals with disabilities, James saw the trip as a meaningful way to give back. His favorite moments have come from Friendship Visits, especially dancing and having fun with participants, and he’s found small towns like Baker, Nevada to be especially memorable. Through the experience, he’s learned the power of teamwork, the importance of pushing through challenges, and gained a new appreciation for the resilience and joy of the disability community. James hopes his journey will inspire future brothers to continue the tradition.
