Jacksonville’s Sonny Gunnells will be honored by the Alabama Boxing Hall of Fame April 23 in Gadsden.
Gunnells will be inducted in the Support Personnel category, which is the Hall’s largest. It includes officials, physicians, media, legislators, etc.
Gunnells has served boxing for more than 40 years as a fighter, coach and official. He was instrumental in organizing the boxing portion of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
Gunnells will be honored as part of a professional fight card held April 23, 6 p.m. at the Venue at Coosa Landing in Gadsden.
Eleven men are being honored at the Alabama Boxing Hall of Fame induction ceremony, along with a live professional fight card. Tickets can be purchased online at oneonesixboxing.com or at the door on fight night.
Alabama has a tremendous fistic past. Previous inductees have included Alabamians Joe Louis, Evander Holyfield, Earnie Shavers, Frankie Randall, Tracy Harris Patterson, Hedgemon Lewis, Deontay Wilder and Byron Mitchell.
The year’s inductees are:
Pro Boxer inductees are Randall Yonker of Mobile, Pete Taliaferro of Mobile, and James Hughes of Mobile.
Amateur Boxer/Toughman inductees are Clint Jackson of Evergreen and Lane Killian of Fort Payne. Old Timer inductees are Edgar Ross of Tuscaloosa and Jack Tillman of Mobile. Manager/Trainer/Promoter inductees are Charles Leverette of Brent and Ross Fields of Birmingham. Support Personnel inductees are Sonny Gunnells of Jacksonville and Sonny Cauthen of Montgomery.
