Calhoun County, AL – Julie Borrelli has officially been hired as the new County Attorney for Calhoun County, set to assume her role on December 1, 2024. Borrelli will begin her transition on November 1, working closely with outgoing County Attorney Gloria Floyd, who will step down after 17 years of service. Floyd’s last official day will be November 29, marking the end of a distinguished tenure that has earned high praise within the community.
Borrelli brings a wealth of experience to the position, drawing from a diverse background in both government and the private sector. Though she acknowledges that her role as a county attorney will be a new endeavor, Borrelli’s past positions have prepared her for the challenge. Her career spans from her service as an administrative officer with the Marines to her leadership roles in the Community Action Agency, a state-funded non-profit. Additionally, she has held a prominent position as the Finance Director for the City of Anniston and currently manages her own legal practice in Anniston.
Reflecting on her time in government, Borrelli emphasized the importance of research and finding accurate answers to legal and procedural questions. “What you learn when you’re working in government is how to find answers,” she stated. She expressed confidence that her familiarity with government operations would make the transition into the county attorney role a natural fit.
Borrelli is excited to take on the new responsibilities, especially her involvement with local issues and the opportunity to make a direct impact on the community. “I like being able to impact local communities,” she said, recalling her time with the City of Anniston. In her new position, she looks forward to advising the county commission on the legality of their decisions while supporting their efforts to advance Calhoun County.
County leaders have expressed enthusiasm about Borrelli’s hiring. Commissioner Lee Patterson shared his appreciation for outgoing County Attorney Gloria Floyd and his excitement for Borrelli’s new role: “Gloria has been a pillar of strength for Calhoun County, guiding us through challenges with unwavering dedication and a true passion for our community. We are deeply thankful for her service and know she will excel at JSU. As we look forward, Julie’s local roots give her a unique edge. Being a resident for over a decade and actively involved in her community, she understands the needs of our residents on a personal level. This isn’t just a position for her—it’s about her community, her neighbors, and her family. Her military background has equipped her with a sense of discipline and leadership, while her experience in government has given her the skills to navigate complex issues. Julie’s not just stepping into a job; she’s stepping into a role that she’s personally invested in, and I’m confident she’ll bring a fresh, dynamic energy that Calhoun County will benefit from. Her commitment to seeing our county thrive is evident, and I believe she has the strength and resilience to lead us forward.”
Commissioner Danny Shears echoed Patterson’s optimism: “All five of us on the County Commission are thrilled to welcome Julie on board to our team. Her impressive legal background, especially in governmental law, means her transition will be much smoother compared to others who might not have that experience. Plus, we’re lucky she’s already one of our own residents, so there’s no need for her to learn our community from scratch or build new relationships—she’s ready to hit the ground running.”
Commissioner Howell added his perspective, noting the qualities that stood out during the hiring process: “I thought she interviewed well for this position. Also, I think it helped me from watching and remembering back the two political campaigns she was part of recently. My hopes are for longevity as our county attorney.”
Chairwoman Henderson expressed confidence in Borrelli’s potential, acknowledging the transition while looking ahead: “We will miss Gloria definitely, but I think Julie will be an asset for the Commission. I’ll look forward to working with her.”
As she prepares to step into the role, Borrelli also acknowledged the legacy left by Gloria Floyd. “I’ve never heard anything but that she’s done a phenomenal job,” Borrelli said of her predecessor, expressing her hope to continue Floyd’s work while building upon the projects already in motion. “I just want to keep growing and continuing to build upon the projects and the work that she’s already doing,” she added.
While she has not yet met all department heads within the county, Borrelli has already established connections with key figures, including Melissa Wood —the county’s Chief Financial Officer—whom she collaborated with during her tenure as Anniston’s Finance Director. Borrelli is optimistic about the future and eager to begin her journey as Calhoun County’s legal advisor.
Borrelli’s hiring signals a new chapter for Calhoun County as it transitions from the long-standing service of Floyd to a fresh perspective, poised to navigate the legal complexities of local governance with a commitment to the community’s well-being.
