Anniston, AL – On February 15, 2023, at approximately midnight, the Anniston Police Department received a call for help from a male stating he had just been kidnapped and assaulted. Upon Arrival officers met with the adult victim and initiated an investigation.
Investigators were able to learn that the incident started in the area of the 400 block of West 29th Street when the victim was attacked by three males and removed from the area and taken to a remote area of Anniston. After being violently assaulted and hit with a handgun to the head, the victim was able to escape from the attack and called law enforcement as soon as he felt safe enough to do so. The victim was transported to RMC Hospital and treated for his injuries and released.
Investigators were able to learn the three names of the attackers. Demario Lamonte Burnett, 24, Deonte Durell Whorton, 25, and Jarmell Antwon Elston, 18 were all later located and taken into custody by Anniston Police Department and transported to the Calhoun County Jail. Anniston Police Chief, Nick Bowles, stated that, “This was not a stranger-on-stranger incident and there is no threat to public safety at this point.” He also said that no other arrests were expected in this case, but the investigation is still ongoing.
