Weaver, AL – On Tuesday, June 6, 2023 at approximately 6:20 pm, the Weaver Fire Department received a call for service regarding a possible structure fire at the old Weaver Airport. Upon arrival, Fire Chief, Brian Bunn, said they observed one of the hangars with flames and smoke.
The McMinn Airport, now closed, was originally opened in the early to mid 1960’s and had a paved runway of 2,650 feet with 5 hangars. It was primarily used for general aviation for people that were coming into, or departing from, events happening throughout the area. It was located at McMinn Road and Airport Road in Weaver.
Chief Bunn advised that there were two planes located in the hangar, but it appeared to be used more for storing hay. During the course of battling the fire other departments were requested for assistance. When the fire was finally under control the Weaver Fire Department, Angel Fire Department, Jacksonville Fire Department, Alexandria Fire Department, Big Oak Fire Department, and White Plains Fire Department were all on scene. Chief Bunn did say that two firefighter were injured while fighting the blaze. A Weaver firefighter suffered from heat exhaustion and was treated on scene by medics but did not need to be transported and a Jacksonville firefighter suffered a deep laceration on his hand which required him to be transported to RMC for stitches. The Jacksonville firefighter was treated and released.
Chief Bunn said that the fire was determined to be out at 11:33 pm after five hours of battling. “I want to thank each department and firefighter that came to assist us.” said Chief Bunn. “I would also like to thank Anniston EMS for being on scene and helping to ensure our firefighters were taken care of.”
