Calhoun County, AL – Saturday basketball: Anniston edges Piedmont by hitting its free throws in overtime, and more
It wasn’t all that long ago the Anniston Bulldogs were worried their problems at the free throw line were were going to bite them at some point in the season. On Saturday, it helped them win an intense game.
The Bulldogs got past Piedmont 68-63 in overtime, locking it up by hitting 10 of 14 from the line in the extra period. They were 24-of-38 for the game.
Kyron Brown, Anniston coach Torry Brown’s son, hit 5-of-6 in the overtime. Bulldogs’ leading scorer Delroy Francis (19 points) also had five points in the extra session, on a 3-pointer and two free throws.
The teams played to a 55-55 tie in regulation. Piedmont’s Alex Odam missed a shot at the buzzer that would have won it in regulation.
Odam, who fouled out in overtime, finished with 16 points. Freshman Rollie Pinto led Piedmont with 20 points. Ish Bethel had 14 on the strength of four second-half 3-pointers. Bethel hit three in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs rallied from a six-point deficit.

MT. PISGAH 54, OXFORD 51: The Yellow Jackets had several opportunities to take control of the game but just couldn’t make the timely play. Oxford’s T.J. Allen led all scorers with 21 points.

Girls Games
BOB JONES 46, OXFORD 33: Justice Woods had another big second half and scored 17 points total and Mya McGrue had 12, but Oxford got only four points from the rest of the its lineup and fell in the second day of the James Clemens’ Tournament of Champions.
Woods scored 15 points in the second half of the 8 a.m. game. The day before she didn’t start, but entered the game after halftime and scored all 20 of her points in the second half to lead the Lady Jackets to a 53-48 come-from-behind victory over Austin.
Xai Whitfield didn’t play either game because of an ankle injury she suffered last weekend and they were also msising Keziah Mickler in the Austin game.
But the Lady Jackets did get a lot out of the weekend. In Saturday’s game they got to play a two-big system for the first time. The whole weekend was a matter of seeing some different competition.
“Huntsville is so traditionally strong in basketball, there are so many good schools up there,” Oxford coach Melissa Bennett said. “It was good to see different people, different competition.”

ANNISTON 43, PIEDMONT 32: Tykeria Smith scored 10 points in the first half to help Anniston open a nine-point halftime lead, then went 6-for-9 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to seal it. She was 12-of-17 from the line for the game. Piedmont’s Ava Pope led all scorers with 20 points.

SPRING GARDEN 83, SAND ROCK 49: Ace Austin, Kayley Kirk and Chloe Rule combined for 61 points and 15 rebounds as Spring Garden won its opener in the Cherokee County Invitational. Austin scored 25 points, grabbed four rebounds, had seven assists and six steals. Kirk had 16 points and six rebounds. Rule had 10 points and five rebounds.
