This world can be cruel, but love and compassion still persist. I’ve seen it. So I write today to ask the reader to extend their love, compassion, and understanding to a group of Americans seeing unprecedented attacks in this country right now. Transgender Americans are facing a haunting rise in discrimination simply for being who they are, and in the past few years, the level of legal assaults on the transgender populace has risen to a heights never before seen. State legislators and governors are passing bills into law attacking transgender Americans’ rights and dignity, with the obvious end goal being their wholesale elimination from society. The word for this assault on the transgender community is unmistakably genocide. Will we, as citizens of Calhoun County, of Alabama, of America, stand for this? I say that I won’t stand for it, and neither should you. Right now the transgender community needs you. They need you to stand up for them in this time of peril. Be there for your neighbors who need your help.
There are about 20,000 transgender Alabamians who live alongside us today, and more than a million transgender Americans in the country as a whole. Many are being forced to flee their homes to survive this barrage of attacks on their basic human rights. I extend my love and compassion to them. I dare to FIGHT for their rights. The reality is that transgender people are our neighbors, and they’re ours to love and care for just as Jesus Christ commands us to. Dare to defend their rights. Show them the love Jesus wants you to.
If you, dear reader, understand why is it vital to take action immediately to protect the lives of transgender Alabamians, then I urge you to call or email your representatives. Tell them that this assault on transgender Alabamians won’t be tolerated, and that if they won’t fight for their rights, we will VOTE THEM OUT. You can find and contact your representatives using this simple online tool: https://www.270towin.com/elected-officials/
Beyond that, you can spread awareness of this issue. Talk to your friends, family, and neighbors. Let them know that transgender Alabamians need their help right now. Post on Facebook, attend a protest, make some noise! Finally, you can donate just a few dollars to an organization that advocates trans rights in the US. You can find a list of organizations to donate to at this link: https://getpocket.com/collections/resource-list-how-to-support-the-trans-community
Thank you for reading, and God bless the transgender community.
