Calhoun County, AL – Community leaders, elected officials, and residents gathered at Chief Ladiga Landing on March 24 to mark the beginning of Calhoun County’s participation in the nationwide commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary with the planting of a Liberty Tree.
The ceremony, led by the America250AL Calhoun County Committee in partnership with local organizations, highlighted the symbolic significance of the elm tree as a historic emblem of unity and resistance during the early days of the United States. Organizers emphasized that the Liberty Tree represents the roots of the nation—liberty, unity, and the enduring spirit of freedom—while serving as a place for reflection and connection within the community.
Historically, Liberty Trees date back to the period leading up to the American Revolution, when colonists gathered beneath a prominent elm tree in Boston to protest British rule. After that original tree was cut down in 1775, similar trees were designated across the colonies as symbols of resistance and unity.
During the ceremony, local officials and committee members participated in the planting of the tree, describing it as both a commemorative landmark and a generational investment for the county. Calhoun County Commissioner Lee Patterson spoke about the development of Chief Ladiga Landing, noting that the park has been years in the making and represents a long-term vision for community use and preservation.
Patterson shared that the property was made possible through partnerships with local entities, including the Jacksonville City Industrial Board and the water authority, which helped secure land and preserve existing natural features. He also highlighted the relocation and installation of a historic bridge at the site, originally constructed in 1949, as part of the park’s development.
According to Patterson, the project represents a significant investment into the county, with approximately $1.5 million allocated toward the park’s development, including landscaping that incorporates native Alabama plants. He described the site as a generational project intended to serve residents for years to come.
Organizers stated that the purpose of the event was to honor the past, celebrate the present, and inspire future generations, with the Liberty Tree serving as a lasting reminder of shared values and community heritage.
The event also marked the official kickoff of local America250AL initiatives, which aim to celebrate Calhoun County’s history, promote community engagement, and highlight small-town patriotic pride throughout the anniversary year and beyond.
Residents are encouraged to participate in the upcoming County-Wide Liberty Tree Ceremony, scheduled for:

Organizers are asking all communities across Calhoun County to attend and share in the celebration as part of this historic milestone.
