Ragland wins first area tournament title in eight years, Anniston wins another; includes all girls area championship games

RAGLAND 69, JCA 47: The Lady Purple Devils (24-3) used a big second half to pull away from JCA and win their first area championship in eight years.
Campbell Adams scored 15 of her game-high 23 points in the second half, Cadence Buchanan had 13 of her 20 in the second half and tournament MVP Sammie Day-Jones scored 11 of her 13 in the fourth quarter to lead Ragland.
JCA grabbed a 17-10 lead in the first quarter, then was held to two points in the second.
Erin Prater hit five 3-pointers and led the Thunder with 15 points. Kara Grace had 13 and Rebekah Carter 12.
”JCA played well and made several runs throughout the game and I am proud of how we weathered the storm and remained focused,” Ragland coach Sawyer Merritt said. “This is an amazing accomplishment for our team and it is rewarding to see the results of years of hard work.
“We have a quick turnaround for sub-regionals, so our excitement will be short-lived as we begin to focus on Monday night’s game.”
Ragland will host Cornerstone in the subregion round, while JCA will travel to Sumiton Christian.

ANNISTON 50, HANDLEY 41: Tournament MVP Shiwanna Jackson scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Lady Bulldogs to another area championship.
The teams traded run for the better part of three quarters. Handley closed to within 30-28 with 2:15 left in the third, then Akayla Perry hit two 3-pointers in an 8-0 run and the Lady Dawgs never led by less than seven the rest of the game.
