FORT PAYNE, AL – Those interested in learning the traditional craft of pine needle basketry will have the opportunity to do so at the upcoming Longleaf Pine Needle Basketry Class on Sunday, February 16, 2025. Hosted by Jacksonville State University’s Field School in collaboration with the Little River Canyon Center and artist Brittney McAlister-Hughes, the class will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Little River Canyon Center.
This hands-on workshop will introduce participants to the basics of coiling, an ancient basketry technique practiced by indigenous peoples long before the pre-Columbian era. Using longleaf pine needles, attendees will learn how to create their own coiled basket, gaining insight into a craft that has been passed down through generations.
Brittney McAlister-Hughes, a skilled artist in traditional crafts, will guide participants through each step of the basket-making process. The class is open to individuals aged 10 and older. All necessary materials, including pine needles, thread, and a small center for the basket, will be provided.
A $55 supply fee is required on the day of the class. Due to limited space, pre-registration is mandatory. Those interested in attending should register in advance by contacting Brittney Hughes via email.
The event will be held at JSU’s Little River Canyon Center, a hub for environmental education and cultural programs in Fort Payne, Alabama. This workshop offers a unique opportunity for participants to immerse themselves in a time-honored craft while enjoying the natural beauty of the canyon surroundings.
