Cleburne County, – Two female hikers reported missing on the Pinhoti Trail were safely located Wednesday, January 7, following a coordinated search involving multiple agencies in Cleburne County.
According to a media release from the Cleburne County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and first responders were dispatched to the area of U.S. Highway 281, just south of County Road 24, after receiving a report that the hikers were lost on the trail.
Using assistance from the Oxford Police Department Aviation Unit, authorities were able to locate the hikers. While first responders were en route to the hikers’ location, a Cleburne County deputy sustained an injury during the operation.
Both the injured deputy and the hikers were safely escorted back to U.S. Highway 281, where medical evaluation and treatment were provided. The deputy was transported to a local hospital and later released after evaluation.
Agencies assisting in the response included the Oxford Police Department Aviation Unit, Cleburne County 911, Cleburne County EMS, Hollis Fire Department, and the Heflin Police Department.
“The quick response and teamwork between our deputies and the assisting agencies made all the difference. I want to commend everyone involved for their dedication and professionalism, and we are grateful the hikers were located and returned safely,” said Sheriff Jon Daniel.
The Cleburne County Sheriff’s Office also reminded the public to take precautions when hiking in remote areas, including planning ahead, carrying proper supplies, and notifying someone of travel plans before heading out.
