Alexandria, AL – The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by a thrift store to report a theft of some property. Investigators were able to identify two suspects that were caught on security cameras mounted outside the business. Upon further investigation Tony Lee Putman, 43, and Steven Edward Walker, 51, were tentatively located in the 7000 block of Hwy 431 at the Spin Den Record shop.
Investigators with the Sheriff’s Office arrived at the location and were seen by a woman outside of the shop. Captain Stone advised, “She immediately told the two suspects that the police were here”, which caused them to flee into another room inside the building. During their exit to the other room, Putnam took his juvenile child with him while they attempted to hide from the investigators.
Capt. Stone stated that there was a standoff that lasted approximately an hour when the investigators made entry into the room and took Putman and Walker into custody. The juvenile was not injured or harmed during the standoff and subsequent arrest of the two suspects. The female that notified the two men of the deputy’s presence, Nakoda Michelle Abernathy, 35, was also taken into custody and charged with resisting arrest.
Tony Lee Putman was currently on another bond facing murder charges in 2018. Putman was accused with his brother, Timothy Putman, of killing 26-year-old Kelsey Abigail Williams of Jacksonville. Timothy Putman is currently still incarcerated in the Calhoun County Jail with a bond of $500,000. Tony Putman was able to secure a bond when his original bail of $500,000 was reduced to $15,000. Investigators are working with the District Attorney’s office to have Tony Putman’s murder bond revoked.
