JACKSONVILLE, AL – In a closely contested race, longtime community leader and former City Council President Mark Jones has been elected as the next Mayor of Jacksonville, securing 52% of the total votes.
Following his victory, Jones expressed deep gratitude to the community. “Words cannot explain the amount of emotions I feel right now,” he said. “Jacksonville has been home for a very long time, and the fact that you’ve trusted me to lead us for the next four years means the world to me.”
Jones stated he centered his campaign on priorities such as improving access to emergency healthcare, promoting strategic economic growth, ensuring public safety, strengthening education, and expanding partnerships with Jacksonville State University. He emphasized a collaborative approach moving forward. “We’ve got plenty of challenges to address here in Jacksonville, but I’m ready to get to work — to identify root causes and collaborate with the city council, state, and federal leaders to develop real solutions that move our city forward.”
Jones also commended his opponents, Tony Taylor and Laura Humphreys, for running issue-driven campaigns. “Tony and Laura both ran strong, respectful campaigns and clearly care deeply about our city. I appreciate their ideas, their efforts, and their commitment to Jacksonville. I plan to consult with both of them as we address the issues ahead. Our city is better when we work together.”
He took time to recognize outgoing Mayor Johnny Smith, who has served Jacksonville for decades. “Mayor Smith has left a lasting legacy in this city. His shoes will be hard to fill, and I intend to lean on his wisdom and knowledge as I step into this role.”
Looking ahead, Jones voiced excitement about working with the newly elected city council. “To the council members who fought hard during this campaign season — I congratulate you. I’m excited to roll up our sleeves and make progress for the people of Jacksonville.”
