Marshall Urges Senate to Pass Short-Term Funding Extension to Avoid Shutdown

Attorney General Steve Marshall Urges Senate to Pass Clean Funding Extension to Avert Government Shutdown

MONTGOMERY, AL — Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall has joined fellow leaders in urging the U.S. Senate to immediately approve a short-term funding extension recently passed by the U.S. House of Representatives.

In a letter to Senate leadership, Marshall and other signatories warned that the livelihoods of millions of Americans could be at risk if Congress does not act before the September 30 deadline.

“A clean, short-term continuing resolution may not be ideal, but it is the responsible course of action to keep the federal government functioning while long-term budget negotiations continue,” Marshall said. He emphasized that the measure would allow servicemembers, law enforcement, first responders, and border agents to continue their work without disruption.

Marshall also stated that if a shutdown occurs, responsibility would rest with Senate Democrats, whom he accused of placing partisan demands ahead of national needs. He criticized Senate opposition to the same kind of short-term resolution that had previously been supported under the Biden administration, noting concerns over $1.5 trillion in additional spending and policy riders.

The letter underscored that a shutdown would not only create challenges for public safety and national security but also disrupt essential services relied upon by American families, including Social Security operations.

Marshall and his colleagues called on Senate leaders to continue bipartisan progress on appropriations bills and to use the temporary extension as an opportunity to move toward long-term, regular-order budgeting.
