JACKSONVILLE – The Pleasant Valley girls have high expectations for the basketball season ahead and they couldn’t have gotten off to a stronger start.

The Lady Raiders got 20 points from Rylee Haynes, 13 from Lily Henry, played everybody and crushed Ashville 70-23 in their season opener.

The Lady Raiders applied pressure early, forced turnovers and converted them into a big early lead. In all, nine players scored for PV. Henry scored all her points in the second quarter.

Hokes Bluff 51, Weaver 11: Chloe Rule scored 17 points, Kileigh Blackwell had 10 and the Lady Eagles held Weaver to three field goals the entire game. Both teams struggled early, but the Lady Eagles were finally able to get on track, scored the first 11 points of the game and continued to pull away. [**read more]

PV boys beaten at buzzer

JACKSONVILLE – Ashton Vann hit a wild 3-pointer at the buzzer after barely avoiding a backcourt violation and Ashville rallied from a 13-point second-half deficit to stun Pleasant Valley 60-58 and spoil the Raiders’ season opener.

PV led by 13 late in the third quarter and by nine going into the fourth, but missing the front end of one-and-ones and having big man Garrett Cranmer foul out with 6:30 to play allowed the Bulldogs back in the game. [**read more]

Hokes Bluff 63, Weaver 37: Jordan Presley scored 27 points and the Eagles pulled away from a close game by outscoring their hosts 35-12 in the middle two quarters. Presley hit three 3-pointers and went 7-for-8 from the line in the stretch as the Eagles extended a 17-12 first-quarter lead to 52-24 entering the fourth. Tristan Brown led Weaver with 13 points.
