Monday Preps for Calhoun County

Calhoun County, AL – Alexandria’s Allen throws no-hitter, and Thunder rolls in baseball; Oxford wins in eight innings, and Piedmont walks it off in softball; Saks soccer goes to PKs to beat Collinsville

Andrew Allen came two hit batsmen short of a perfect game, and Alexandria beat Piedmont 4-0 in a showdown of Calhoun County baseball powers Monday. Allen struck out six batters and faced 22 batters, one over the minimum. He threw 50 strikes in 72 pitches. Samuel Henegar led the Valley Cubs at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Evan Snow was 1-for-2 with an RBI, and Eli Barnes was 1-for-3 with a double and a run. Jack Hayes got the start for Piedmont, allowing four hits, two earned runs and three walks to go with three strikeouts in six innings. Jake Austin struck out two batters and allowed on hit in one inning of relief.

JACKSONVILLE CHRISTIAN 13, JEFFERSON CHRISTIAN 0: The Thunder lived its nickname with a 9-run first inning, and three JCA pitchers combined to pitch a one-hitter. The Thunder pounded out seven hits and took advantage of two errors and a walk in the first inning. The big blows included Deon Dupree’s 3-run double, Ethan Fair’s 2-run double. Justin Crocker and Cam Moses each had an RBI single. Dupree, Moses and Noah Lee had three RBIs apiece on the day. Moses went 3-for-3, and Lee was 2-for-3 with a double. Fair went 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs. On the mound, Lee, Dupree and Elijah Martin combined for the one-hitter. Dupree and Martin each had five of the trio’s combined 13 strikeouts.

Softball

OXFORD 6, ALEXANDRIA 5: Oxford scored three runs in the top of the eighth and withstood Alexandria’s 2-run rally in a clash of Calhoun County softball powers. Reagan Sanders, Justice Woods and Kaelyn Crossley had RBI singles for Oxford in the top of the eighth. In the Alexandria eighth, Clancy Bright hit a leadoff double, scoring Jill Cockrell from second in the international tiebreaker. Bright scored on Christian Hess’ grounder. Blakley Mooney got Allyssa Hunt to line out to right field and struck out Charlee Parris to end the game. Mooney pitched the full eight innings, allowing five hits and three walks with eight strikeouts. Oxford had 17 hits. Woods went 4-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Emma Tims-Becerra and Raina Zachery each had three hits, and Zachery had an RBI. Ashlyn Burns went 2-for-4. Cockrell had a triple and RBI. Bright had a double and two RBIs, and Parris had a double and RBI.

PIEDMONT 7, HANDLEY 6: After Handley scored four runs in the top of the fifth to take a 6-2 lead, Ava Pope plated a run with a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the fifth, Savannah Smith delivered an RBI double in the sixth. That set up Piedmont’s 3-run seventh, culminating in Sarah Goss’ walk-off single. Jaycee Glover and Armoni Perry each doubled in Piedmont’s seventh-inning rally. Goss, Smith and Glover each had two hits and an RBI on the day. Perry and Cacey Brothers and each had a hit and an RBI, and Abby Baird had an RBI for Piedmont. For Handley, Mariana Whaley went 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs and three RBIs. Breydan Watkins and Brynnley Lane each had two hits and an RBI.

WHITE PLAINS 9, WOODLAND 4: Leighton Arnold keeps hitting home runs. She hit two solo shots against Woodland on Monday, finishing 2-for-2 with three runs and two RBIs. Callie Richardson also homered, hitting a grand slam in the sixth inning to finish off a 2-for-4 day with a run and four RBIs. Haylie Smith, Karli Otwell and Kylee Provencio all doubled, and Otwell drove in two runs.

ETOWAH 17, OHATCHEE 5: Alyssa Davis had a hit and two RBIs for Ohatchee. Alanah Fitch had a hit and RBI.

Soccer

SAKS 3, COLLINSVILLE 2: Saks won a penalty-kick shootout for an area victory.

The match was tied 2-2 at the end of regulation. Saks goalkeeper Abby Ramirez blocked three Collinsville penalty kicks, and eighth-grader Hailey Delgado scored the winning penalty kick. Saks eighth-grader Layla Garcia scored both Saks goals in regulation.

JACKSONVILLE 1, ETOWAH 0: Alex Mullins scored the game’s lone goal, assisted by Griffin Walker. Goalie Peyton Spruill had four saves in the shutout. [read more sports stories…]
