Munford’s Tanner Smith wasn’t just perfect for five innings against Talladega on Monday. He was also efficient. The senior struck out nine batters in Munford’s 22-0 victory. Of his 45 pitches to the minimum 15 batters, he threw 39 strikes in their Class 4A, Area 8 game. At the plate Mason Brewer, Connor fisher and B.J. Anderson had three RBIs apiece. Brewer hit a triple, and Anderson had three hits. David Pettus and Kyler Shaw drove in two runs apiece. Lathan Stephens, Cameron Strickland and Alex Petty each drove in a run. Stephens, Strickland and Austin Wynn each hit a double. This story will be updated as more results come in.

Softball

ALEXANDRIA IN GULF SHORES: The Valley Cubs (15-11) won two of three games, beating Dale County 6-5 and John Carroll Catholic 13-0 and losing to Spain Park 5-2. Allyssa Hunt’s walk-off, two-run home runs in the bottom of the fifth inning made the difference against Dale County. She went 2-for-2 at the plate. Pressley Slaton pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. Jill Cockrell, Clancy Bright and Charlee Parris drove in a run apiece. Parris hit a double. Against John Carroll, Slaton and Khloe. England combined to pitch a shutout. Slaton allowed three hits in three innings with four strikeouts, and England pitched one inning, allowing one hit. Cockrell went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and three RBIs. Bright, Parris, Christian Hess and Lauen Weber each had singles and an RBI. Slaton and Brenlee Sparks each had a single and RBI. Hess had both of Alexandria’s hits against Spain Park and drove in both runs.

WHITE PLAINS IN GULF SHORES: The Wildcats won two of three Monday, beating Cullman 3-0 and Pisgah 9-2 and losing to Yorkville (Ill.) 7-0. Leighton Arnold held Cullman to three hits with three strikeouts over four innings. She also went 2-for-2 with a triple, run and RBI. Callie Richardson had a home run and two RBIs. Against Pisgah, Arnold allowed two hits and no earned runs over three innings. She also hit a double and had two RBIs. Richardson added her second home run of the day and drove in two runs, and Cooper Martin had a double and RBI. [read more sports stories…]
