The players on the Alexandria volleyball team had plenty of incentive to play well. The Lady Cubs started a particularly demanding two-week stretch of matches and took the floor for the first one Monday knowing coach Whitney Welch was doing well after delivering her third child earlier in the day. Louie River Welch entered the game of life at 11:50 a.m., weighing in at 8 pounds, 11 ounces. As the newest member of the team, he will have a more than a dozen additional aunties when he starts coming to matches.

After hearing that happy news, the Lady Cubs went out and thrashed Saks 25-4, 25-10, 25-4, giving assistant coach Kelli Johnson her first varsity win as acting head coach. Kailey Dickerson and Eryn Spradley each had 10 kills for the Lady Cubs (23-8). “The girls did a good job of focusing and controlling the game on our side,” Johnson said. “We talked a lot before the game about playing controlled and confident. “We have a busy couple of weeks before Whitney comes back. We want to get better every day and then move into October with Whitney back.”

White Plains 3, Anniston 0

The Lady Wildcats were on top of their service game and swept Anniston 25-10, 25-6, 25-4. Taylor Hodge scored eight aces, Mallory Cobb had five and Leighton Arnold had six to go with a team-high five kills.

Munford 3, Handley 0

With four starters down due to injuries, the Lady Lions cobbled together a lineup and swept Handley in an area match 25-19, 25-20, 25-16. Ellie Jones had 13 kills, Ashtyn Bishop served five aces and Kastin Lathem had 18 assists to lead the way.
