Calhoun County, AL The Calhoun County Commission held an inauguration for all commissioners recently elected on November 8th. This was followed by an organizational meeting and a reception honoring the commissioners.

  • Welcome by Mark E. Tyner, County Administrator
  • Invocation by Pastor Fredrick Smith of The Bridge Christian Church
  • Oath of Office performed by the Honorable Alice K. Martin, probate Judge and by the Honorable Kim McCarson, Circuit Clerk
  • Comments were then given by all Commissioners:
    • Fred Wilson, Commissioner District 1
      • Commissioner Wilson wanted to thank all the citizens of district one who elected him. He also thanked his family for supporting him and celebrating this moment with him. He has always and will always strive to be a good public servant and to support the people of his district and the county.
    • Danny Shears, Commissioner District 2
      • Commissioner Shears stated how much he respected his fellow commissioners and looked forward to continuing to work with them. He stressed that the united vision of the commission would continue to make Calhoun County great. He thanked his family for their support and belatedly thanked his parents for both being at the swearing in.
    • Carolyn Henderson, Commissioner District 3
      • Commissioner Henderson was joined by many family members and perhaps had the most moving moment of the day as she stated that Eli lives on through her. She looks forward to advocating for her district and continue the legacy that was started by her late husband.
    • Terry Howell, Commissioner District 4
      • Commissioner Howell stated how eager he was to get started in this role. He acknowledged that it was a long time coming and hard-fought journey, but he looks forward to the work and getting to know all the other commissioners. He also mentioned five points he intended to follow. 1. Be honest 2. Show respect 3. Say thank you 4. Listen, and 5. To let people know you care.
    • Lee Patterson, Commissioner District 5
      • Commissioner Patterson stated how much he has loved the last eight years and how much he looks forward to the next four. He also said that Calhoun County is a top tier county in this state, and it is only going to continue to improve.

      • Agreement for Lodging tax and remittance processing. This agreement has been extended to December 31st, 2023.
    • 911 Board Appointment – District 2 – Unanimously Approved
      • Mark Tyner’s portion needs to be appointed. The term expires on March 1st, 2025. Commissioner Share nominated Phillip Winkles to the unexpired term.
    • Alabama Forever Wild Land MOU – Unanimously Approved
      • The agreement is made for the purpose of identifying, squaring, managing, protecting, and conserving natural lands and waters that are environmental or recreational importance for the benefit of future generations.
    • Department of Youth Services Application – Family Links – Unanimously Approved
      • The amount of $246,100 has been budgeted for the Calhoun County Family Court Success Academy, a program of Family Links. This funding is provided via grants.
    • Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) Grant Resolution – Unanimously Approved
      • This is a matching funds agreement offering financial aide to combat rising crime, improve the criminal justice system, assist victims of crime, and assist in the problems of juvenile justice. The requested amount is $60,800.
    • Commission Chairman Rotation Schedule Resolution – Unanimously Approved

      • Thursday, November 24th is canceled due to Thanksgiving. The December 8th meting has been changed to November 15th.
  • Public Comments
    • A representative from the Agency for Substance Abuse Prevention thanked the commission for their continued support and also invited them to the 50th year Gala on February 7th at the Oxford Civic Center.
    • Dr. Reyes, superintendent for the Calhoun County Schools, spoke and mentioned many of the recent success from sports to choir, and band that the schools have celebrated. He also gave a specific thank you to Sheriff Wade and the entire Sheriff’s Department for the handling of the recent criminal search that occurred in Ohatchee. He commended the Sheriff for have a deputy follow the school buses on the Ohatchee area and for keeping the school and SRO updated and the kids safe.
    • Commissioner Patterson wanted to thank the staff for all their hard work.
    • Commissioner Shears also wanted to thank Dr. Reyes for the updates, and he wanted to note the success of the Oxford girls flag football team for their continued success.
