MONTGOMERY, AL – Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall announced the conviction of Tiffany Alexander Fields for the theft of hydrocodone tablets while employed as the director of nursing at a Montgomery area nursing home.
Fields pleaded guilty to one count of Theft of Property in the Second Degree before Montgomery Circuit Court Judge Monet Gaines. She was sentenced to 18 months in the custody of the Department of Corrections under the community corrections program and surrendered her Alabama nursing license.
The case was investigated by the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit following a referral from the Alabama Department of Public Health. Investigators found that between November 2022 and April 2023, Fields used pre-signed prescription pads left by the nursing home’s medical director to send unauthorized prescriptions to the facility’s pharmacy. She then received the narcotics from the pharmacy’s courier and kept them.
Assistant Attorney General Nathan Mays prosecuted the case.
Attorney General Marshall emphasized the importance of accountability in healthcare, stating, “Those entrusted with the care of patients must be held to the highest standard. This conviction reflects our unwavering commitment to protecting vulnerable patients and holding bad actors accountable.”
The Medicaid Fraud Control Unit is a division within the Attorney General’s Office and receives 75% of its funding—approximately $1.5 million for fiscal year 2024—from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General.
