Ongoing Lake Drawdowns Underway for Flood Control and Wildlife Protection

Alabama Power lake drawdowns began

Alabama – Alabama Power has commenced its annual lake drawdowns, starting October 1 and continuing through November 30, as part of its commitment to managing water levels in accordance with Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) regulations. This seasonal practice is crucial for several reasons, including flood control, wildlife protection, and preparing for future drought conditions.

The primary objective of lowering lake levels is to prevent flooding during heavy rainstorms while also supporting water needs during the winter months. This seasonal adjustment helps ensure that reservoirs are adequately prepared for potential spring rains, thus mitigating the risk of overflow.

Alabama Power manages 14 hydro facilities and lakes across the Coosa, Tallapoosa, and Black Warrior rivers, including Weiss, Neely Henry, Logan Martin Lakes, and Lake Harris in Wedowee. The drawdown process allows water levels to be gradually lowered each fall, with a return to higher levels by May, dependent on rainfall.

Alabama Power adheres to a specific plan outlined by FERC, which requires the company to monitor changing conditions throughout the drawdown process. The utility collaborates closely with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to determine water release requirements and ensure that the lakes refill to their guide curves whenever sufficient rainfall occurs.

  1. Flood Control: The drawdowns help manage water overflow after severe weather events, safeguarding surrounding communities from potential flooding.
  2. Wildlife Protection: By releasing water, Alabama Power supports local aquatic ecosystems, protecting fish and other marine life, as stipulated in their agreement with FERC.
  3. Drought Mitigation: In times of drought, lake levels may be adjusted to assist in managing water resources effectively.
  4. Navigation: With Alabama leading the nation in miles of navigable channels, the company works with the Corps of Engineers to ensure safe boating conditions through appropriate water release.
  5. Recreational Use: As the lakes refill with rainwater in spring, levels are adjusted to prepare for recreational activities during the summer months.

Customers seeking further information on Alabama Power’s lake drawdown procedures and schedules can access resources through the Shorelines website (apcshorelines.com), where they can find the drawdown schedule for Fall 2024 and other important updates. The Shorelines app is also available for download to keep customers informed about lake levels and announcements.

As Alabama Power continues its efforts to manage lake levels responsibly, the community can rest assured that these processes are in place to protect both residents and the environment.
