Opportunity for Community Input: Pedestrian Safety Project Adjacent to Jacksonville State University

Pedestrian Safety Project Feedback

Jacksonville, AL – In a continued effort to prioritize safety and improve the pedestrian experience, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is seeking valuable feedback from the community on proposed roadway and pedestrian enhancements near Jacksonville State University’s main campus. Following a public involvement meeting last Thursday, ALDOT has opened an online avenue for the campus community to share their thoughts and opinions on the proposed projects.

The online feedback option is part of ALDOT’s commitment to engaging with the community and ensuring that the voices of those directly affected are heard. Members of the campus community, as well as local residents, are encouraged to participate and provide insights into the proposed improvements. The designated period for submitting comments extends until Friday, March 1, 2024.

To submit your feedback, visit the official ALDOT website at ALDOT Pedestrian Safety Project.Your input is crucial in shaping the final plans and ensuring that the proposed projects align with the needs and preferences of the community.

The proposed projects are focused on enhancing pedestrian safety and overall traffic flow near the Campus of Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama. There are two primary projects currently under consideration:

1. AL-21 Pedestrian Improvements:

– Location: From South of Jacksonville Public Square to 11th Street Northwest.

– The project aims to enhance pedestrian safety along AL-21, incorporating improvements from the Jacksonville Public Square to 11th Street Northwest.

2. AL-204 Pedestrian Improvements with Center Turn Lane:

– Location: From Nisbet Lake Road to the Intersection of AL-21 (Pelham Road North).

– This project includes pedestrian enhancements and the addition of a center turn lane on AL-204, guiding pedestrians and improving overall traffic management.

Both projects also involve specific enhancements to key areas. For instance, at Jacksonville Square, a raised separation will be constructed between traffic on AL-21 and parking spaces in front of businesses, contributing to a safer environment. On AL-204, a raised landscaped median will guide pedestrians to a designated crosswalk at Skelton Street.

It’s important to note that right-of-way considerations may be necessary for the proposed projects. The public involvement meeting’s purpose is to keep the community informed about the design features and gather valuable input from those who utilize this route regularly.
